Koh Libong

Despite being the largest of the islands off the coast of Trang province, Ko Libong may well get the fewest visitors. Sounds good? read on.The lack of crowds of Ko Libong is a definite asset -- if you come on a quiet day, your only companions on the beach may be the resident hermit crabs -- really! The island has a refreshingly natural atmosphere, and part of it is actually protected as a wildlife reserve. The island is home to three small Muslim fishing villages, the interior is filled with rubber plantations and rugged jungle terrain, there is a couple of viewpoints, some good swimming, and the island's resorts are nicely spaced along a single yellow-sand beach on the island's west coast. What more do you need?Ko Libong may as well be known as Ko Dugong, because that is what the island is really famous for. There is a sizable population of these amiable beasts grazing on the sea-grass beds that flourish off Libong's southeast coast. All of the island's resorts can help arrange boat trips to have a look see, but as with all wildlife spotting, remember that sightings aren't guaranteed.

Unlike some of the other islands off Trang, Ko Libong is quiet close to the mainland and the longtails go whenever full. Given there are three villages on the island, you shouldn't have too wait too long for a ride over to the island.

Getting there and away

Boat
Most visitors to Ko Libong book a minibus and longtail boat transfer from Trang for around 300 baht. With some work and good timing, it is possible (and a bit cheaper) to reach Ko Libong by public transport. First, catch a public minibus from Trang town to the pier at Ban Haad Yao for 65 baht. The trip takes just over half an hour. Try and get here early, as a public longtail boat departs at roughly midday, and costs 50 baht. If you've missed the boat, you'll either have to pay around 450 baht to charter a private boat, or wait until enough other people show up to split the fare. Boats dock on Ko Libong at Ban Praw pier, on the opposite side of the island from the three resorts. Motorbike taxis will be waiting to take you there for 60 baht per person.
